A 30-year-old woman pillion-riding on a motorbike reportedly hit her head against a roadside electricity pole and died after the two-wheeler skidded off the fish water spillage in Canacona on Sunday. It must be said that this was a tragedy waiting to happen. According to an eyewitness just half-an-hour before the accident a local youth also fell on the road and suffered head injuries after his scooter skidded on the fish-water. Spillage of fish water leads to slippery conditions on the roads and has resulted in accidents at several places across the state, especially near fishing jetties and beaches where fishing activities are carried out.
It is pertinent to note that fish which is being transported in tempos and trucks is mixed with powdered ice in order to keep the fish fresh. This leads to spillage of fish water on the roads. Police need to crack a whip against tempos and trucks transporting fish and letting out waste water on the roads. Besides making the roads foul smelling, it also leads to accidents. These vehicles need to be fitted with collection tanks at the bottom which collects the waste fish water. Alternatively fish which is a perishable commodity needs to be transported using refrigerated trucks.
