After long pending demand for Women's Reservation Bill was approved union cabinet on Monday. The bill requires amendment in the Constitution and can be passed only if two third majority in Parliament approves it. In Goa, we have 40 MLAs and the bill will have seat reservation of 13 seats in the state assembly. With this the present three women MLAs Jennifer Monserrate, Delailah Lobo and Deviya Rane will have to contest with other women candidates who may be panchas, sarpanchas in the respective villages. The present three lady MLAs are wives of elected representatives and the scope for contesting by women's candidates and for wives of MLAs has opened the door to enter active politics. In Goa it is a person rather than party to which one belongs. Women candidates like Cecilia Rodrigues from AAP and Adv Pratima Coutinho who are leaders taking up issues have more chances to get elected in their ward. With this bill the chances of women entering the politics has increased and they will be part of decision-making.Women are better administrators and planners hence their contribution towards society will be important for the benefit of people and women. Presently we have many elected women representatives in Lok Sabha and with this reservation we will be able to hear more women's voices in parliament and in Goa assembly too.
