Collect garbage daily to avoid illegal dumping

Collect garbage daily to avoid illegal dumping

Not too long ago we had the ‘Traffic Sentinel’ scheme wherein citizens were asked to click photos of violators of traffic rules and send  to the Traffic Police cell. Now we seem to have something of a ‘Garbage Sentinel’ in Margao. It is learnt that in order to rein in culprits dumping garbage in the open at night and odd hours, the Margao municipality has requested citizens to click photos of such persons as also that of vehicles used to dump the waste illegally and to forward them to the chief officer on a WhatsApp number.   Since much of the dumping of garbage takes place in the darkness of the night, one will need mobile cameras having night vision. People usually resort to dumping of garbage in open spaces or water bodies when the civic bodies fail to collect the trash on a daily basis. Hence the municipality needs to make it a point to see that the garbage collectors carry on with the door-door collection of garbage even on Sundays and public holidays in order to avoid such illegality.
