Governance in our country runs along two parallel lines; one being the panchayats and the other being the legislature. However, panchayats have been subverted by the legislature, whose members take decisions based on their personal interests, rather than collective interests of the villagers. Children of the soil seldom have any say in matters which might directly affect their environment, livelihood and lifestyle. When there is a clash of interest between the collective opinion of the villagers and the elected representatives, the decision of the latter prevails. Under such conditions, when the village life is threatened, people can approach the court. Unfortunately, legal recourse a very long time to resolve and the judicial system does not necessarily have to go by the opinion of the people, but resort to legalities defined by the government laws and agreements. The second option is to elect a different set of persons for the legislature who, the villagers hope will respect their opinion. The final option is massive protest, that requires mobilization and leadership. Ideally, there should be a bridge between the panchayats and the legislature.
