I wish to express concern over the worsening law and order situation in Goa, particularly the recent spate of burglaries in Colva. While it is somewhat reassuring that citizens can expect action after approaching their local MLA, the government must adopt a comprehensive strategy to address the root causes of crime.
The families who have fallen victim are among those who contribute significantly to Goa’s economy, often working outside the state, paying taxes, and expecting basic safety at home.
Sadly, the reality is grim. Today, Goan families face threats not only from burglaries but also from gang wars, reckless driving, and drunk driving accidents. Added to this is the unchecked influx of migrant workers from lawless regions, many of whom live in unauthorized settlements and are linked to criminal activity.
What is most troubling is the government’s stance on these illegal structures. Instead of dismantling them”thereby eliminating hideouts for criminals”the administration appears more intent on legitimizing them.
This erodes public trust and undermines the rule of law, sending a dangerous signal that offenders can act with impunity. Goa needs decisive action, not half measures, if the safety and security of its people are to be restored.
