The Supreme Court has stated that instead of merely providing free grain to the poor, the government should focus on creating adequate employment opportunities for them. This directive was issued by the court while hearing a petition related to the distribution of free grain to migrant workers. In essence, even the judiciary is displeased with the idea of free or "mufat ki roti." While hearing a case concerning food security under the National Food Security Act, the court gave this advice. The court questioned how long such free distribution of resources can continue and whether it is sustainable. Currently, under the National Food Security Act of 2013, around 81 crore (810 million) people are being provided free grain. The court raised a counter-question, asking why efforts are not being made to provide employment opportunities to migrant workers and enhance their capabilities instead.The government, on its part, mentioned that free grain was provided to the poor during the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath. In response, the court raised a provocative question: "Will taxpayers also be provided free food now?"The government now truly needs to create more and more employment opportunities.
