Digital rural India needs digital safety first

The renewed push for the Digital Rural India Mission comes at a time when cybercrime is rising sharply across the country. Ironically, it is not the lack of digital access but the lack of digital awareness that has enabled fraudsters to trap even well-educated citizens through “digital arrest” scams, OTP thefts and fake KYC messages.

If this is the reality in cities, one can only imagine the risks awaiting first-time users in remote villages, where support systems are limited and misinformation spreads quickly.

Connectivity alone cannot empower people; digital literacy and digital safety must come first. Unless villagers are trained to recognise fraud, protect data and use services confidently, expansion of digital infrastructure may unintentionally expose them to danger and deepen existing vulnerabilities.

Technology can transform rural India ” but only when citizens are prepared, aware and protected through sustained education and community-level support.
