This refers to 'Don't give a false sense of comfort on disaster management' (TGE, August 3). This was a hard-hitting editorial on the issue of ‘Disaster Management’ in the state. It has clearly brought out the ground realities of how a two-day spell of heavy rains some time back disrupted life in large parts of Goa, with people struggling in flood waters even in the so-called smart city of Panaji. The National Disaster Management Authority may be doing all it can to provide relief to the flood-stricken citizens, but how far can they go? We have seen how serious the situation in Wayanad really is.
The authorities need to really go to the core of the issue. Declaring certain portions of land as ‘Ecologically Sensitive Areas’ may not be of much help unless they are serious about the whole issue. At the end of the day, nobody can stand up to Nature's fury, for when Nature strikes, it strikes with all its might. The editorial rightly states that the situation is seemingly and increasingly going out of hand, and proactive steps must be taken to protect the environment. Alarm bells are ringing!
