Through your esteemed newspaper, I wish to express my deep concern over the treatment of the Christian community and the alarming rise in communal intolerance in India.
Recent incidents involving attacks on churches, vandalism of Christmas decorations, and increasing communal violence across several states raise serious questions about religious freedom and the maintenance of law and order. While the Prime Minister attends Christmas services and visits Christian and Muslim-majority nations, such gestures risk appearing merely symbolic when extremist groups continue to harass minorities.
Statements by certain leaders portraying India as an exclusively “Hindu nation” directly undermine the Constitution, which unequivocally defines India as a secular republic. No individual or organisation has the authority to redefine the nation’s identity or divide its citizens along religious lines.
The cancellation of Christmas holidays in states such as Uttar Pradesh, restrictions on food choices, and attempts to rewrite history further deepen mistrust and fear among minority communities.
The government must act decisively to uphold the Constitution, ensure the safety and dignity of all communities, and rein in groups that promote hatred and division.
