Heavy fines, jail can curb drunk driving

It is both a sad and  a serious state of affairs that even after new traffic laws were implemented to curb the menace of drunk driving , the situation in Goa has worsened over the years. According to the statistics published  a whopping 2,318 cases of drunk driving have been booked from Jan-June 2024 as compared to 535 in the previous year --- A 300% increase that  speaks volumes of the failure of the  Goa police to curb this menace. At present the police enforcement drive to check for drunk driving from 8pm to 11pm hardly serves any useful purpose, as most of the night parties commence late night and extend to the wee hours of the morning. What is required is police posted outside all party joints and hotels, and strict all night 'nakha bandhi' and alcometer tests. Those found having imbibed alcohol in excess of the permissible limits should be heavily fined and imprisoned. This experiment if carried out  strictly for a few months is bound to yield  good results, as it has  worked in Mumbai with admirable results. Why is the Goa police hesitant to act,  is what makes one wonder?
