Keeping marriage happy: A few norms to reduce disputes

A recent report highlighted the concerning rise in cases of marital discord. One of the instances highlighted in the report is a preference for Goan pav-bhaji on Sunday leading to a major dispute. With all that is going on around us, it is difficult to fathom that such a trivial issue could lead to a dispute. Should they be blessed that these are the kinds of problems they face, instead of serious ones?

Numbers do tell a sad tale and a happy one. The sad part being that things didn't work out between the couple. The happy part being that probably more women who are in troubled marriages choose to end things and move on rather than suffer their whole lives. However, there is a degree of caution that needs to be followed when it comes to ending a marriage.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to the problem but there are norms that one can follow to reduce stress or disputes. Some of them include treating the spouse as an equal partner, respecting each others' decisions and choices, giving each other space, not taking the other for granted, etc.
