Khaki-clad hooliganism must be ended

The recent custodial assault on Navelim youth Edberg Pereira is yet another dark reminder of police brutality in Goa. Sadly, this is not an isolated case. From the death of Cypriano years ago, to the 2023 Kundai incident exposing a police“thief nexus, and the 2024 assault by constable Sameer Phadte on a fast-food owner, the pattern is disturbingly clear ” impunity breeds repetition. Even I was once assaulted and humiliated by a PSI at Old Goa Police Station over a trivial issue. Despite complaints to top authorities, no action was taken. When errant officers face only suspensions and are reinstated within months, justice is denied and lawlessness thrives. The brutal treatment of Pereira ” chained and assaulted ” shows utter disregard for human dignity and policing ethics. Those found guilty must be dismissed, not merely suspended, and held personally responsible for victims’ medical expenses. Only exemplary punishment will restore public trust and end this khaki-clad hooliganism tarnishing Goa’s image.
