In a time when public faith in leadership often wavers, acts of courage and responsibility stand out with striking clarity. The recent incident at Dabolim, where a 60-year-old woman tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run accident, could have easily become just another statistic in the growing list of road fatalities. Sankalp Amonkar, the Mormugao MLA, did not limit his response to the expected calling for medical assistance or waiting for law enforcement to take over. While ensuring that help was on the way, he made a split-second decision and chose to pursue the fleeing driver. Amonkar engaged in a high-speed pursuit covering 12 kilometres that was dramatic and fraught with risk. This was not a calculated political move but an instinctive act driven by a sense of justice and responsibility. The chase ended at a dead end, where the driver was finally apprehended and handed over to the police. Amonkar’s decision to go a step further and chase the fleeing driver reflects presence of mind, courage, and an unwillingness to tolerate wrongdoing. The MLA’s actions deserve public appreciation and recognition by the government as an example of proactive leadership.
