The three-day assembly session concluded on 26th March 2025, with various issues discussed. On the second day, there was a heated debate between the opposition and the ruling government on issues related to Goa’s future and its preservation.
One important issue raised by Vasco MLA Krishna Daji Salkar was about the history textbook for Class IX. The book dedicates only three pages to the history of the Marathas and warriors like Chhatrapati Shivaji and Sambhaji, who fought for ‘Hindavi Swarajya’. In contrast, it has 21 pages on Mughal rule, focusing on how they ruled and the hardships they caused. The MLA suggested adding more content on warriors like Maharana Pratap, Ahilyabai Holkar, and Rani Laxmibai so that students learn about their sacrifices for the country.Goa’s textbooks should also highlight the state’s freedom fighters, such as Tristão Bragança de Cunha (T. B. Cunha) and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, who played a key role in Goa’s struggle for freedom. It is important that students understand the challenges faced in securing Goa’s identity and independence. Hopefully, these concerns will be taken seriously and given priority in school textbooks.
