Often it is noticed that street lights, especially those in village or interior roads, are vandalised by miscreants. There was a recent report of such frequent incidences along the walking track built by the Water Resources Department at Bicholim. Under the cover of darkness anti-social activities and robberies occur and there is a danger of attack by animals and accidents could take place.
The street lights are installed by the government at considerable costs and efforts, and need to be protected.
To prevent breaking of the bulbs by stone-throwers, the electricity department could fit perforated metallic shield covers to encase the bulbs. Although the illumination may slightly decrease (depending on the luminosity of the bulbs) but the bulbs would be protected from vandals.
Any person caught indulging in damaging the street-light fittings or breaking the bulbs should be heavily fined, say 10 times the cost of the lamppost or 100 times the cost of the bulb.
