Saving Goa, one step at a time

Stopping the destruction of Goa caused by corrupt officials is difficult, but the following proverb may offer a way forward. “How do you eat an elephant?” The answer is, “One bite at a time.” This African proverb teaches us to break daunting tasks into manageable steps. If Goans in each area do their part by (a) observing illegalities, hill cutting, and environmental destruction, including the felling of trees; (b) staying alert to potential real estate projects, especially large housing developments; and (c) filing RTIs, complaints, and cases in their respective areas, it can become a powerful collective effort to save what remains of Goa. It is also important to encourage the exchange of ideas, solutions, and strategies, along with mutual support among Goans from different regions, all working towards the same goal.

I write this in anger and dismay at the government’s lack of seriousness towards safety and legality in Goa’s hospitality businesses. Yet again, cottages were gutted in a fire in Ashwem. We all remember the outrage when a fire killed 25 people and injured 50 at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in December 2025.  Post that tragedy, numerous illegalities and systemic failures came to light.
