Shabby road works in Saligao show how little authorities care

The entire stretch of road in Arrarim-Saligao ward (from Peggy’s corner up to the Mater Dei School area of Bairo Alto) was dug up in March 2024 to lay underground water pipelines or electricity cables. Locals living there and daily commuters were forced to suffer for months for no fault of theirs.

After repeated complaints, the road was finally hotmixed after the monsoon season last year. But only a few months later, parts of it were dug up again, this time to install underground chambers. The work was carried out in a careless and unprofessional manner. Today, the result is clear ” the road surface is rough and dangerous in many places, especially around the chamber areas.

Two chambers stand out as particularly risky. One is right in the middle of the main road at Arrarim, just before Sacrula’s house, and the other is near Pinto bakery. Both resemble open graves more than proper chambers. They look as if they have been left in this shabby state to invite serious accidents and “offer instant salvation” to anyone unfortunate enough to fall victim there.

The authorities must act quickly and fix these two chambers. Even a local mason without formal training could have done a better and cheaper job.

Meanwhile, I hope that the Sarpanch will keep his word and ensure another badly damaged road ” from the crossroad circle near the Government Primary School up to the Saligao Seminary/Pilerne Industrial Estate ” is fully hotmixed by the first week of October, as promised in the local media. This road has been waiting for full restoration for the past two years and needs urgent attention.

An autopsy confirmed electrocution as the cause of her death. This is puzzling because the heater was not connected to an electrical socket when she was noticed by her husband. Water heaters or immersion rods are of two types: a pocket-sized one that is used to heat small quantities of water for making tea, coffee, two-minute…
