Tone down impulsive rhetoric on trade issues

It is clear that the United States runs trade deficits with major partners such as China and the European Union. However, bridging this gap requires calm judgement rather than brinkmanship. Impulsive rhetoric should be toned down, and efforts should focus on wider trade agreements based on practical solutions.  

This can be done by negotiating fairer trade deals and adopting inclusive measures that spread benefits more evenly. Protectionism should be avoided by reducing contentious trade issues and recognising competitive merit, especially the quality of goods and services. A more accommodating and balanced approach during discussions will help build trust.  

Trade depends on the interdependence of sovereign nations and must be conducted in a fair and equitable manner. As the Christmas season approaches worldwide, its spirit of goodwill should guide the resolution of outstanding issues. Constructive dialogue can help address trade imbalances in sensible ways, narrow trade deficits, and prevent unnecessary strain on relationships between nations.
