Of late, I have noticed that the water supplied by the PWD is turbid in Siolim. The same issue has been reported in local areas such as Mapusa and Guirim, where water consumers are facing similar problems. This could be a serious lapse in the PWD water treatment plant for not treating drinking water to the required standard for human consumption. Alternatively, there could be damage to the underground main supply line, allowing murky sand to enter the line and reach consumers.
It would be advisable for the PWD to install a filter tank at every reservoir tank if there is an overload on its main filtration plant. This issue recurs every year without any improvement from the department to rectify it, amounting to a deficiency in service. Departmental heads should make public statements when such incidents occur, advising consumers on precautions for self-protection.
This is the monsoon season, and some supply line pipes are installed under rainstorm drains that carry sewage water instead of rainwater, or soak pits are located near such lines. Any leakages can cause water contamination and potentially increase vector-borne diseases. It is insufficient to declare 100 percent water connectivity; safe drinking water is needed at all times.
