When PIOs waste public time and money

While the Right to Information (RTI) Act is a powerful tool for transparency, some public officials misuse it by issuing frivolous RTI replies, wasting public time and resources. This hinders the efficiency of public authorities and delays legitimate requests.

For example, I received an email from a Directorate office to pay Rs 10 and collect information. I travelled 20 kilometres seeking specific old documents with registration numbers. The PIO was absent on 10.07.2025, so the clerk took a Rs 10 court fee stamp, pasted it on my email, and handed me a letter instead of the information, asking me to visit again for inspection. Isn’t this a wastage of time and money?

I spent Rs 1000 to visit the office for a Rs 10 payment, only to get a negative reply. The PIO’s email said to collect information, while the letter asked me to inspect documents. Both contradict each other.
