The Goa government will reportedly soon roll out a 50% bus fare concession for women employed in the private sector. This is a good move by the state government. The 50% concession could also be extended to private buses, as many women travel in these buses. It would be in the fitness of things to extend the concession to all women, including non-working women such as homemakers and housewives, who probably form a major part of the women who travel by bus. These non-working women are more in need of a bus concession. It is pertinent to note that the Karnataka government has made bus travel free for all women, applicable on non-luxury buses run by the state transport corporations of Karnataka. The goal is to enhance women’s mobility and empower them. The Goa government could also give thought to adopting the free bus travel scheme for all women. The scheme will allow women, especially non-working women and those in low-wage jobs, to save money on travel costs, which can be used for essentials like food, medicine, and sundry expenses. By removing the financial barrier of commuting, free travel can help women access a wider range of employment opportunities and become more active in the workforce. The scheme will improve women’s access to educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and other essential social services. Free transport addresses the complex and often diverse travel patterns of women, such as managing household chores, work, and family care.
