The government on Tuesday has partially demolished an illegal encroachment on government land (leaving the main structure--long accused of violations untouched) belonging to the owners of Romeo Lane at Vagator after the death of 25 people in a fire at the club's sister concern, Birch by Romeo Lane, in Arpora. The government's sudden display comes not from commitment to rule of law, but from the compulsion of public anger after the above deadly disaster. It's a fact that today every major establishment/nightclub in North Goa is paying hefty haftas to the local politicians, govt authorities and due to which the government itself is allowing all types of nightlife illegalities to operate in the coastal belt. I feel that the government's partial demolition of the illegal encroachment of Romeo Lane at Vagator is a farce. Well, the government should take officials of the different departments to task for accepting bribes or haftas from all the club/pub owners and allowing them to carry on with their illegal activities in all the coastal belt areas. It should demolish all the notorious nightclubs or pubs which are found operating illegally and not following any safety measures.
