The Congress Party in Goa has reportedly accused the state government of attempting to sabotage the concluding programme of the ‘Goy Rakhonn Yatra’ by preventing party leader Rahul Gandhi from addressing the gathering at the historic Lohia Maidan in Margao. The party’s application to use the venue was reportedly rejected on the grounds that it had already been reserved, forcing Congress to organize the concluding programme in the parking lot of the Margao Cricket Ground (MCC). This incident raises questions about whether political parties are being provided a level playing field to organize public meetings and communicate with the people. Congress has repeatedly alleged that programmes involving Rahul Gandhi have faced obstacles in different parts of the country. However, the choice of venue does not necessarily determine the success of a political gathering. Public participation depends more on the message, the leadership and the issues being raised. A meeting held in a parking lot can sometimes attract more attention. Democracy thrives on debate, dissent and the freedom to assemble peacefully. Public spaces belong to the people and should not become instruments for political advantage.
