Communicare Trust, in partnership with Lotus Film and TV Production and Help India have organized a musical to celebrate the life of Goa’s very own Jazz Saxophonist, Braz Gonsalves. Braz an octogenarian who started his journey playing Sax in a circus. From there he became a renowned saxophone player.
The event, Raga Rock is scheduled to be held on June 14 at Kala Academy, Panaji and June 15 at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, both at 7pm.
The musical has been put together by the NGO Communicare Trust, based in Dona Paula whose aim is to preserve languages and culture in the form of art, music and theatre. The NGO has joined hands with Maria Meireles, artist from Portugal as the musical director. Sandeep Doifode, English teacher at Sunshine Worldwide School and Drama enthusiast is assisting Maria with the direction. 16 children from different backgrounds, including 4 boys from Bethesda Life Centre are the main actors who will act, sing and dance. The children are aged from 12-17. The musical will tell Braz’s story, starting from his childhood, when he started to play the violin to his journey to Mumbai, where he becomes The Braz Gonsalves to meeting the love of his life and eventually the tragedy that changed his life and turned him towards the Almighty Lord. This roller coaster called Life, that Braz boarded will be told through songs created by the legend himself, especially some from his very own album: Raga Rock and hence the name of the Musical. The lyrics to the tunes have been written by the children participating with the support of Maria Meireles.
Lotus Film and TV Production is coming together with a team to create a documentary on this legend, which not only narrates his journey, but it will also include footage of all his performance in Macau, Portugal and other parts of the world and conclude on the Musical which we have put together for him. Several musicians and friends were interviewed and will be part of this documentary.
To be able to fund the documentary as well as the musical and concert, Communicare Trust, represented by Nalini Elvino de Sousa, started a crowdfunding campaign on the platform Ketto. The tickets are priced at Rs1000, Rs 700, Rs 500 and Rs 200 as per the seating. These are on sale at Panaji: Champs, Pedro Fernandes, Furtados, Kadence and Carasid (Miramar); Margao: Champs, Pedro Fernandes, Furtados and Club Harmonia Tickets will also be available at the venue 2 days before the event.
