A Pocketful of Chuckles is the first largest exhibition of the original pocket cartoons of Goa’s iconic artist, Mario de Miranda being held on the occasion of his 90th Birth Anniversary celebrations.
One of the pioneers in the field of illustrative or editorial art in India and a first among equals ,the late Mario Miranda with his prodigious talent , straddled genres and went on to garner national and international attention with his caricatures, drawings and vignettes, in a career spanning five decades and more.
This collection, culled from the archive of his editorial art, transcends time and socio-political context to bear testament to the gentle, empathetic wit and keen observation with which Mario chose to engage with the issues, challenges and quirks of everyday life.
Honoured with the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002 and the lifetime achievement award from the All India Cartoonists's Association, Bangalore , Mario was posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award in the Republic of India, by the President on 4 April 2012. In 2009 , Mario became the first Indian to have the highest civilian honour of "Cross of the Order of Isabel the Catholic" conferred on him by the King of Spain, Juan Carlos. In the same year , he was also made "Commander of the Order of Prince Henry", a Portuguese National Order of knighthood, under the President of the Republic AnÃbal António Cavaco Silva.
The exhibition will be on display till the 21st of May.
