AAP demands mental health support for students

MARGAO

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Youth Wing on Saturday voiced concern over the recent tragedies at the BITS Pilani Goa campus. At a press briefing, President Rohan Naik along with Neash Steve Coutinho and Shiva Naik urged Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to increase police patrolling around the campus and nearby areas to curb illegal activities and improve the safety of students living on and off campus.

The leaders reminded the state government of the Supreme Court’s order on July 30, 2025, to set up a committee to investigate campus-related incidents. “How much longer will the CM take to implement this important order?” asked Shiva Naik, who also called for compulsory mental health support in all institutes.

“Over the past 10 months, the campus has seen five serious cases, including suicides and suspected foul play. This has raised major concern among students, parents, and the community. The AAP Youth Wing urges the Chief Minister to take urgent and concrete steps to ensure student safety and mental well-being,” he added.

The Youth Wing suggested that every higher education institution in Goa should have a qualified counsellor to regularly monitor and support students’ mental health, and help prevent depression-related cases. They also called for a Special Assembly Session in Goa to bring in and pass a comprehensive law mandating safety measures, mental health support, and accountability systems in all educational institutions.
