Gomant Vidya Niketan, Margao is all set to organise a two-day classical music concert, Anahat Naad in memory of late Ashok Govind Kare on March 3 and 4 at Margao. Classical singers Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, Pandit Vinayak Toravi, Vidushi Shashwati Mandal, Pandit Vishwanath Kanhere, Ustad Sarfraj Khan and Subhash Parwar will be performing at the concert. The concert will begin at 5.30 pm on the first day with Pt Vishwanath Kanhere doing a samvadini solo. He will be accompanied on tabla by Chandrakant Gadkar. Pt Vishwanath Kanhere took the basic lessons in music from stalwarts like Pt Eknath Thakurdasji, Govindrao Patwardhan and Vishwanath Pendharkar. It was his father, Ramchandrabuva Kanhere who taught Vishwanath to play samvadini. Later he became a disciple of Pt Ram Marathe and Pt Jitendra Abhisheki.
Pt Vinayak Torvi will also present a solo vocal accompanied by Sudhanshu Kulkarni on samvadini and Abhay Datar on tabla . Pt Vinayak Torvi learnt the initial lessons in music from his father Kirtankar Malharrao Torvi before getting trained under Pandit Narayanrao Mujumdar. He also learnt for a decade from Gururao Deshpande of Gwalior gharana and practiced Kirana gharana style under Pt Bhimsen Joshi. Being blessed to have his lessons from the noted Gurus of Kirana gharana, Pt Vinayak has performed in India as well as abroad. He is known for ‘khyal’ style of singing as well as devotional music.
The second day will begin at 10 am with a vocal performance by Subhash Parwar who will be accompanied by Dattaraj Surlakar on samvadini and Subhash Kamat on tabla. Taking his initial lessons from his father Chedo Parwar, Subhash Parwar enrolled with late Ladu Gawanekar at the age of seven for learning music. He underwent special training from Pt Vasantrao Kadnekar at Kala Academy Goa. He received the Goa Kala Academy’s scholarship to learn music for three years at ‘Swarbhishek’ from Dr Raja Kale. Parwar has performed in concerts in Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra and also on radio and television.
This will be followed by a sarangi performance by Ustad Sarfaraj Khan who will be accompanied by Mayank Bedekar on tabla. Ustad Sarfaraj Khan carries forward the legacy of his known family that has contributed immensely to the music world in sarangi. Ustad Sarfaraj began his training under his father at the age of four. Later he became the disciple of Padmavibhushan Pt Ramnarayan.
The evening session will begin at 5.30 pm with a vocal act by Vidushi Shashwat Mandal who will be accompanied by Dattaraj Surlakar on samvadini and Abhay Datar on tabla. Vidushi Shashwati Mandal, the granddaughter of late Pt Balabhau Umadekar, received basic music lessons from her mother Kamal Mandal when she was very young. She also trained under the guidance of Pt Madhup Mudgal and Vidhushi Purnima Chawdhari. After receiving the national scholarship, Shashwati took lessons in ‘Khyal’ and ‘Tappa’ from one of the best Gurus from Gwalior gharana, Pt Balasaheb Puchwale.
Pt Ulhas Kashalkar will sing late in the evening at 7 pm accompanied by Dr Sudhanshu Kulkarni on samvadini and Mayank Bedekar on tabla. Trained for a long period under Pt Ram Marathe and Pt Gajananrao Joshi, Pt Kashalkar’s singing reflects the best from Gwalior, Jaipur and Agra gharanas. He is the recipient of Sangeet Natak Academy National Award, Padma Shree Puraskar and Tansen Sanman (from UP government).
