If you are interested in art, an intriguing exhibit by renowned Goan artiste Mohan Naik at South Goa’s Carpe Diem art gallery should be on your to-visit list for today.
The rather reclusive Naik, belongs to a breed of select artists who have mastered the art of painting Goan landscapes, capturing the place as well as well as the routines of the people. And while most artists have a trick or two up their sleeve when it comes translating their ideas on canvas, Naik, does it with a goat!
His unique exhibition 'Through The Eyes Of A Goat' opens at the Majorda gallery on January 9 and will be open for viewing until January 31.
Naik’s obsession with incorporating goats in his art, stems from the innocence exuded by the humble animal, which otherwise is reared mostly for meat and often for milk in Goa.
Goats, abundance of nature, as well as people going about their lives in pastoral Goa are also a part of the immediate landscape, in the rather remote village of Ghodkem in Cuncolim village, where Naik was born in a farmer’s family.
He credits his other inspirations and influences to the old masters and Indian miniatures. Art aficionados say that Naik’s art itself contains elements of the Indian miniatures, especially when he paints his figures on canvas.
Naik’s colour schemes, especially the use of orange and yellow shades “ the warm pastel colours which are often symbolic of tropical Goa and its sunshine “ too are a signature in its own right.
A Bachelor of Fine Arts, Naik, has participated in several group as well as solo exhibitions, both in India and abroad.
