The tenth edition of “Semana da Cultura Indo-Portuguesa (Goa)” will kick off on Saturday, September 29, at 6pm at Hotel Mandovi.
A discussion on “Portuguese Influence on Goan Culture”, moderated by author Alexandre Barbosa will be held on the opening evening. Panel members will include historians Prajal Sakhardande and Maria Lourdes Bravo da Costa, while Minister for IT Rohan Khaunte will be the chief guest. Renowned fadista Sonia Shirsat will also be performing on the day. Although the opening event will be open for the invitees only, the other festivals scheduled in November and December will be for public viewing.
This year, the event is set to be bigger and better, with a host of cultural activities planned over a couple of months. It’s been a decade since the cultural event was started to appreciate and celebrate the rich cultural flavours of India and Portugal.
The event will include a Portuguese film festival, fado singing competition, music workshops, and a photography exhibition.
A two-day culinary and music festival “Evenings of Indo-Portuguese Cuisine and Music” will be held on November 29 and 30, where people will be able to savour Goan-Portuguese cuisine like bacalhau and chorico pao. The event, to be held at Taleigao Community Center, will see a host of Goan musicians perform through the evening.
The celebration of culture will continue with a fado singing competition on December 5 at Institute Menezes Braganza (IMB) Hall. Semana da Cultura Indo-Portuguesa has been having the fado competition since 2013, to encourage fado talent in Goa. Fado workshops will be held by Sonia Shirsat and Professor Delfim Correia da Silva.
Simultaneously, a photography exhibition will be held at IMB from December 5 to 7. This year, photographs from Pantaleao Fernandes’ newly launched coffee table book - Rare Portraits - will be on display.
The Portuguese film festival, curated by Nalini de Souza and Prof Delfim da Silva , will take place over three days from December 8 to 10 at Maquinez Palace, Old GMC Complex.
