MOG Foundation has taken an initiative to celebrate the LGBTQ community through art. In collaboration with the Humsafar Trust, Goa Livelihoods Forum and Connect, MOG Foundation will launch a day of fun-filled as well as intellectually stimulating series of events on November 10.
An art installation by Subodh Kerkar, an exhibition of artworks on the theme of LGBTQ curated by artists Kedar Dhondu and Viraj Naik, a seminar organised by the Humsafar Trust in collaboration with Connect, film “screenings and discussions and an evening of dance and music are all lined up for the day. The exhibition showcasing the works of young and emerging artists will be on display from the November 10-30.
Fostering inclusivity and pluralism to breaking the social as well as cultural barriers, MOG initiative - ‘Freedom is in the Air’ - is inspired from the historic statement of Justice Indu Malhotra and aims to put together a platform for the LGBTQ community to gather and celebrate whilst also providing a creative space for them and the ‘other’ to engage, integrate, debate and in the course “ chart the way forward.
‘History owes an apology to the members of this community and their families, for the delay in providing redressal for the ignominy and ostracism that they have suffered through the centuries,’ stated Justice Indu Malhotra. The judgment by the Supreme Court is a huge step ahead in the multitudes we are yet to take. However, there is a lot more at stake, there is a need to make people aware, spread awareness and most importantly change mindsets.
The event will be inaugurated at 11 am by eminent personalities from across diverse disciplines “ fashion designer Wendell Rodricks, chairperson of Humsafar Trust Ashok Row Kavi and founder at MOG, Subodh Kerkar.
Following the opening remarks is the dissemination of the SC Verdict on section 377 by SC lawyer “ Amritananda Chakraborty in the morning session. Post lunch, Museum of Goa would host the release of India’s first white paper on LGBTQ Livelihoods by Charudutta Pannirgahi (mentor “ FIDR) and Goa Livelihoods in the presence of Daulat Hawaldar, secretary of Finance, Art and Culture. There would be a panel discussion between Apurva Asrani (filmmaker), Ashok Row Kavi (chairman “ Humsafar Trust), Amirtananda Chakraborty and Subodh Kerkar moderated by Vivek Raj, ceo, Humsafar Trust, and film screenings produced by the Humsafar Trust under the same theme. In the evening Smita Singh, of World Ocean will perform. There will be food, games and stalls for the public.
