Sanitary waste
After the Goa State Pollution Control Board confirmed that sanitation waste dumping at Sonsodo, the Congress has demanded that the GSPCB direct the Margao Municipal Council to clear off the mess created by the Civic body and dispose the same in a scientific manner and avoid health hazards and pollution.
Margao Congress Block Convener Savio Coutinho further stated that with the Pollution Control Board confirming that mixed waste and sanitary waste has been blatantly dumped and covered with mud at Sonsodo, its charges against the Margao Municipal Council waste management failure stands confirmed.
He further stated that the admission of the Council the work of backfilling was going on near the retaining wall under construction near Manovikas High school established that substandard work was being executed at the construction site as well.
“While we appreciate the immediate inspection of the GSPCB, we demand that the GSPCB direct the Council to clear off the mess created there and dispose the same in a scientific manner and avoid health hazards and pollution”, Coutinho said.
“Sanitary waste and mixed waste was planned to be used for backfilling work by the contractor, and bills for murrum soil would have been paid for, as it would have been difficult to identify what material was underneath the top soil covering”, he said.
He added: "Can the technical section of the Margao Municipal Council and the Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar who is also a civil contractor explain how stable the proposed concrete road would be when laid over mixed and sanitary waste?, Coutinho questions.
