La La Land
Director: Damien Chazelle
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone
In a time where musical movies seem to be slowly going out of fashion, La La Land comes as a cheerful relief for ardent musical lovers. And if you're not a fan of musical films, La La Land will make you an instant convert.
Right from the word go, La La Land will draw you in as a group of people do a perfect Broadway style dance atop car roofs on a crowded road, the kind that makes you want to get off your seat and join in the fun as well. The film then introduces a pair of young dreamers in Los Angeles. Mia (Emma Stone) who works as a barista, dreams of becoming a Hollywood actress and her life consists of constant shuttle between the coffee shop and auditions. Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) is a struggling jazz pianist who wants to open his own jazz club and keep this dying genre of music alive. In the meanwhile to support himself, he has to contend with performing at any pubs and restaurants and playing music that he doesn't care about. However, no one seems to care about his music except Mia who charmed by the sound of his music, stumbles into the bar where he is performing one night, only to be rudely brushed off by Sebastian. But they meet again and a bond is forged.
As the film title suggests the story is about following your dreams and sticking to your convictions even though the world may be against you. But it is also about so much more. Through some beautiful tracks, viewers watch as Sebastian and Mia fall in love with each other, much like in old movies. And the music is certainly haunting, the kind that will get stuck in your head and have you humming it long after you have left the theatre. But they aren't just fluffly tracks, but tunes with meaningful lyrics which will resonate with everyone who has ever dared to dream. The tune City of Lights may just turn into your next all time favorite once you've heard it. It also follows the many common challenges in a relationship and the sacrifices one has to make. It is also an unbashed celebration of the beauty of music especially jazz. Quite a few people like Mia may insist that they hate jazz or don't understand it. Sebastian will banish those thoughts from your mind with his passionate talk and performances. Indeed Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone has given the performance of their life in this film and are truly deserving of all the accolades and award nominations coming their way. Noted singer John Legend also has a small but prominent role in this film and it's certainly enjoyable to see him in the acting role for a change.
La La Land is a film brimming with emotions, nostalgia and magic. It is a film for all the lovers and dreamers out there and a must watch.
