Bringing the different yoga training centres in the state together under a single umbrella organisation, yoga lovers in Goa have formed Goa State Yoga Academy in order to help Goans live a healthy lifestyle. The academy will be officially inaugurated by Union Minister of State in the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) Shripad Naik on March 18 on the auspicious day of Gudi Padva at Kala Academy,Panaji. This was announced by Pandurang Madkaikar, social welfare minister and chairperson of Kala Academy,

“The sole aim of the Goa State Yoga Academy is to promote yoga under one roof. All the directions and schemes pertaining to central government and state government related to yoga will be centralised through the Goa State Yoga Academy,” said Madkaikar who has been appointed as the chairperson of the academy.

The academy will have AYUSH minister Shripad Naik along with Chief Minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar, Minister for Art and Culture Govind Gawde and Rural Development Minister Jayesh Salgaonkar as patrons.

“Dr Suraj Kanekar will serve the academy as yoga guru. All forty constituencies will have a yoga centre each and a special yoga training course will be initiated by the academy,” briefed Madkaikar.

Highlighting the goal of the academy, the minister stated further that the sole aim of the academy is to promote yoga in the entire state of Goa and include citizens of all ages. “All schools, beginning from primary to higher secondary level will be included in the yoga programme. Even senior citizens will come under its purview and will be advised to embrace yoga to lead a healthy life. This inclusion of yoga in the lives of Goas will be irrespective of caste, creed and religion,” announced Madkaikar.

For this, training will be given to teachers of all subjects, including physical education (PE) so that it becomes a way of life for all - teachers as well as students.

“Special yoga camps will be organised to train school teachers. Authorised certificate courses and employment generated courses will also be organised,” informed the minister.

Also, training sessions for government employees, religious bodies, sports and cultural organisations, self-help groups etc will begin in full swing.

“Our challenging aim is to keep our teenagers away from ill effects of addictions,” mentioned Madkaikar. He pointed out that all sections of the society will be targeted for yoga awareness and healthy lifestyle.

Apart from imparting yoga education, the academy will also look into other aspects of life such as humanity, discipline, cleanliness, hygiene and moral values. It will also strive to ensure that Goa is neat, clean and pollution free.
