My family and I are split over Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. My father loves Trump and think he rocks and so my younger brother supports him too. My mother, my sister and I prefer Hillary Clinton. I know that we live in South Goa and not somewhere in South US, but we are still following the election, the debates and all that, because my father is very interested in American politics from his time as a student there years ago. I need to get my father on to Hillary’s side. Please explain how to do it?

It’s a good thing you guys realise that you’re neither American nor a resident of the US. It’s alright to follow international politics, there’s no harm in that, but diving the house along Democrat and Republican lines is a bit much, right? I have no idea how to get your father on to Hillary’s side. From where I’m standing they’re both a bit much, although Trump does look like a fool from many angles. Not that I have been checking him out from many angles but you do know what I mean. My guess is, just let it be and after November 9 it should not really matter anyway. If Hillary wins, you can stand there bending your thumb and do a ‘na na na na na na’ dance. If Trump does become president, well, you can live in the knowledge that even though your father was a supporter, he couldn’t do much about it. Speaking of your father, he lived in America and still supports a Republican? A bit weird, in my opinion, but since I don’t know him I’m going to keep mum about it. Oh, do you have a wall around your house? Did he build it? Just asking.

I am a writer facing writer’s block. But I am an early-rising teetotaller which means I can’t seek inspiration from alcohol or meet people at parties. Can you suggest some ‘sanskari’ ways to find knowledge and inspiration and meet new people?

Do people who aren’t writer face writer’s block as well? How would they know that they’re facing writer’s block if they aren’t writers? Did that confuse you? Good, multiply that 100 times and you’ll get to where I am after reading your question. Alcohol doesn’t provide inspiration. Alcohol makes people do stupid things which they then write about. That’s exactly how Douglas Adams wrote The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Although, I’m not so sure it was just alcohol involved, if you know what I mean *wink*. Here’s what I suggest, as a ‘sanskari’ way of getting inspired. First, sit and stare at a blank wall for atleast 10 minutes, if not 20. Then, walk to the nearest mirror, slap yourself and say “START WRITING.’ Rinse and repeat until you do. You may want to stock up on cold cream.

Is it too late to play the saxophone? I’m 35 years old and I’ve always wanted to play a horn but I never had the confidence to do it.

It’s never too late at all. I’ve always wanted to play the drums. So, two years ago I picked up this nice Pearl set for over Rs 60,000. I played it for a month and my neighbour offered me Rs 70,000 for it. He wanted to give it to his son as a going away gift; his son was going to Pune to college. So I sold it and made a decent profit on it. But I decided not to buy another kit. My wife said that I was good but according to her there was no scope for me to get into a band because there are lots of drummers out there. That’s what I thought too, but then I realized that my neighbour’s son was a guitarist not a drummer. I have a feeling that I was played. Still, a saxophone is not as loud as a drum kit right? Sure, go ahead. Just don’t sell anything to your neighbour, and remember, YOU’RE NOT TOO OLD TO BE A DRUMMER, sorry, saxophonist.
