Museum of Goa will be hosting a talk by Jason K Fernandes on the topic Islam and the Indo “ Portuguese this Sunday, June 16 from 11:30am “ 12:30pm. The term Indo-Portuguese often acts as a code for Hindu-Christian. In his presentation, Jason Keith Fernandes will highlight the Islamic influences in Indo-Portuguese culture. Appreciating Islamic inputs will illustrate how the conversation between the cultures of the subcontinent and Iberia were facilitated by the presence of Islam.
Jason is a researcher at the Centre for Research in Anthropology at the University Institute of Lisbon (CRIA-IUL). He has a doctorate in anthropology for his dissertation “The Citizenship Experiences of Goan Catholics”. His current research project “Faith, Nation, Empire” explores the concept of Empire while looking at the place of Islam in Goa, and the response of Catholicism in Goa to Indian nationalism.
In addition to interests in politics in the margins of the subcontinent, Jason, member of the Al-Zulaij Collective, is also interested in articulating a postcolonial theory that is cognizant of the experiences outside of Anglophone and Northern European worlds.
