Away in the relatively remote Mayem village, otherwise known for its iron ore mines, is a small pocket of watery haven called Mayem lake. For generations in Goa, this lake was the place to be for a family outing or a school picnic. Almost hidden from the map of an average tourist, who has not signed up for organized bus sightseeing tours, Mayem lake is the place to be if you want to do a spot of boating.
The lake is located amid the hills of Mayem village which is around 25 kilometers from Panaji and is well connected by road.
The quiet waters of the lake are ideal for a spot of boating. There is no shortage of pedal boats here and it doesn't cost a bomb too, unlike the prices for a boat ride along the more commercially savvy coastal belt. Adjoining the lake is a government guest house operated by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation, which presents you with the option of a very idyllic lake-side stay if you plan to spend the night at Mayem lake.
Because water is aplenty and all year round, the Mayem lake is also a good site for birders, who can spot a wide variety of avia in the vicinity of the lake. So, when you do get here, a pair of binoculars and a camera would be a great idea.
