The post office in Lotoulim is proud to have Goa’s first pictorial cancellation stamp, depicting the sculpture of Saint Mirabai. It is a great moment for Goa that Loutolim gets the first permanent pictorial cancellation of Goa. It is on the sculpture of Mirabai at the Big Foot. Sculptured by Maendra Joceline Araujo Alvares, the founder of Big Foot, the sculpture is 14 meters x 5 meters completed single handed in 30 days.
It is noteworthy that the Mirabai sculpture has entered six record books including Limca Book of Records for being the longest laterite sculpture completed with fastest speed. This is another ‘first’ for Maendra who has many firsts to his credit.
It is most befitting that music loving Goans are honouring Mirabai both in sculpture and through the pictorial cancellation. The pictorial cancellation will be used at Loutolim post office to cancel letters posted in the specified letter box at the Big Foot an Educational and Cultural Hub. From now onwards it is the permanent pictorial cancellation which is going to take the memory of the visit all over the world in the form of the cancellation impressed on the picture postcards and letters which are generally posted by the western tourists. The pictorial cancellation is a collectible for the philatelists.
The line art for the pictorial cancellation is illustrated by Maendra himself. “In 15th January 2012, Mahapex held at Pune a special cover and cancellation on Mirabai sculpture was released. A permanent pictorial cancellation is different from the normal cancellation found on letters. In this case it is the picture of Mirabai which will be found on the cancellation,” shares Maendra.
What travels around the world but stays in one corner? Some respond to this riddle, saying a postal stamp. But often they forget the stamp that cancels the same. The first permanent pictorial cancellation stamp of Goa based on the sculpture of Sant Mirabai at the Big Foot Loutolim was launched on October 12.
