The Goa Chitra Museum, Benaulim is all set to host ‘Giving Voice to India’ (GVI), an international quality vocal tuition and coaching in Western music from July 26 to 30.

GVI is the brainchild of acclaimed soprano Patricia Rozario (OBE), professor of voice at London’s prestigious Royal College of Music, and renowned pianist Mark Troop. The aim of the programme is firstly, to raise the standard of the western vocal art form in India, and secondly, to create opportunities in India for singers to perform.

GVI employs the Bel Canto Technique which results in a voice with resonance and purity of tone, consistency across the registers of the voice, a high degree of breath control, excellent projection, and longevity of the voice. Furthermore the course ensures correct pronunciation in the basic European languages used for singing “ Italian, German, French and English, and in-depth stylistic training.

Giving Voice to India is into a sixth successful year. GVI singers discover not only the joy in singing well, but also get the chance to appear in concerts associated with the course. The success of GVI is evidenced through the fact that its participants have already performed at the Con Brio Festivals from 2011 to 2015; NCPA’s prestigious production of the twin operas Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci and Carmina Burana, in February 2012, and the Monte Festival of the Fundação Oriente in 2013, 2015 and 2016, in Goa. GVI’s first opera, Britten’s , was produced for Con Brio in 2013, and we were proud to present an all-Indian cast.

In 2014 GVI has presented Purcell’s opera in July and August, performing in Pune, Mumbai, Goa and Delhi, to rave reviews.

In October 2015, GVI independently put up a production of Opera Scenes from Operas such as Handel’s Xerxes, Mozart’s Magic Flute, Cimaroza’s Il Matrimonio Segreto, Jonathan Dove’s The Enchanted Pig, and Choruses from Nabucco and Lucia di Lammermoor.

GVI currently runs courses three times a year “ December/January, March/April and July/August. New entrants are welcome, and are heard in the first morning session to assign their level.

Tambdi Surla

Bereft of colour or concrete, there’s something beautifully pure and mystic about the ancient Mahadev Temple in Tambdi Surla. Carved from sheer stone, the 12th century temple dedicated to Shiva, stands solemn by itself under a dense canopy of trees in the remote Goan village located almost 60 kms from Panaji. Reckoned as one of the oldest temples in the state, it was built in the Jain style during the reign of the Kadamba-Yadava kings, who ruled the region of Goa and other…
