The legend of Mirza and Sahiban

Mirza, who was from from the line of Jats and Sahiban who belonged to the tribe of Sial, were childhood friends who studied together. and fell in love as they grew older. However their love story was opposed by Sahiban's brother's who fixed up her marriage to a local named Tahir Khan. On the day of the wedding, the couple eloped on Mirza's horse and are pursued by her brothers. When Mirza and Sahiban take a break to rest under a tree, Sahiban is said to have hidden Mirza's arrows under a tree so that he would not kill her brothers. Some other versions of the stroy say that she broke the arrows. A defenseless Mirza is killed by her brothers and as he is pierced by an arrow, Mirza is turns towards her with a look of betrayal etched on his face but Sahiban watches it all unfold without saying a word. Some versions of the story say that Sahiban killed herself after this but Peela who is said to be one of the first to put this oral legend in writing does not mention her fate. The question of why Sahiban broke the arrows still remains one of folklore's unanswered questions.
