Tucked away near Patto Bridge, opposite the old PWD office in Panaji, Vinod Restaurant is easy to miss due to its modest size and unassuming location. But for food enthusiasts who value authentic flavours over flashy settings, this little spot is a must-visit.
A legacy of love
and dedication
For 40 years, Yeshwant Naik and his wife lovingly ran Vinod Restaurant as a family business, earning the trust and admiration of locals and visitors alike. Now, the torch has been passed to Kishorr Rao, who manages the restaurant with the same dedication. “Mr Naik built this place from scratch, grinding masalas by hand on a stone, long before mixers were common,” shares Rao. “He and his wife created a name for Vinod that resonates across North and South Goa. Even today, the masalas are prepared under his guidance to ensure we stay true to our roots.”
Authentic Goan cuisine
Vinod Restaurant takes pride in offering genuine Goan cuisine that reflects the region’s rich culinary heritage. “We believe Goan food isn’t just about the ingredients; it’s about the soul. Today, you see signs claiming ‘authentic Goan food,’ but many kitchens are run by cooks unfamiliar with the delicate balance of coconut and spices that define Goan curries,” Rao explains. “Here, every dish is prepared with care to uphold its authenticity.”
Signature dishes
A favourite among customers is the fish thali, which offers a rotating selection of fish and prawns, each dish bursting with local and homemade flavours. For those craving variety, the restaurant also serves a delicious array of rice plates, including veg, chicken, and mutton options, each filled with the same comforting, traditional taste. The chicken xacuti is another customer favourite, a rich and flavourful dish that captures the essence of Goan cuisine. Breakfast lovers can also enjoy bhaji pao, a simple yet satisfying start to the day. Vinod Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, ensuring that patrons can enjoy authentic Goan fare at any time.
Gesture of gratitude
What sets Vinod Restaurant apart is its heartfelt gesture of gratitude towards those who serve society. The restaurant offers special discounts to defence personnel, doctors, nurses, police officers, fire brigade staff, and even reporters. “These are the people who work tirelessly in thankless jobs,” says Rao. “If we can show them a little appreciation through our food, it’s the least we can do.”
Students, too, are welcome to enjoy these concessions. “From college groups to engineering and ITI students visiting Panaji for picnics, we want them to feel at home here,” he adds with a smile.
Quality and affordability
Despite the rise of upscale restaurants offering continental fare, Vinod Restaurant thrives by staying true to its roots. “We don’t compete with those who prioritise ambience over food. Our focus is on quality and affordability,” says Rao. “Some places charge extravagantly for rice and curry; we offer the same for Rs 200 without compromising on taste. That’s our mantra.”
Empowering women
The staff at Vinod comprises a close-knit team, many of whom are housewives juggling family responsibilities. “We’ve hired people who genuinely need support”women whose husbands are out of work or absent, and mothers trying to provide for their children. It’s fulfilling to give them an opportunity,” Rao shares.
A diverse clientele
The restaurant has become a gathering place for a diverse clientele, including ministers, bureaucrats, artists, and tourists. “We’ve had everyone from local politicians to international visitors, including aspiring models,” says Rao. “Many tourists visit us multiple times during their stay, which speaks volumes about the warmth and service they experience here.”
Dreams of expansion
While the restaurant has retained its old-world charm, Rao envisions expanding its reach. “We dream of opening branches across Goa and beyond, keeping the essence of Vinod Restaurant intact,” he says.
Enduring through challenges
Vinod Restaurant’s journey hasn’t been without challenges, especially during the recent roadworks under the Smart City project. Yet, Rao remains optimistic. “This place has survived for 40 years because of the love and loyalty of our customers. We’re confident we’ll continue to thrive.”
A cornerstone of
Panaji’s food scene
In a city bustling with modern eateries, Vinod Restaurant continues to be a cornerstone of Panaji’s food scene. As Rao aptly puts it, “This isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a home for everyone who walks through our doors.”
