The issue of migration has been surrounded by heated debate over the years. Bringing economic, social as well as cultural consequences, migration has become a common phenomenon with the emergence and spread of globalisation. India is not new to migration within its borders. While some states of the country have earned a name for themselves as origin of migrants, others have been at the receiving end of migration.
For all its laid-back character, Goa too has been witnessing considerable inflow as well as outflow of people. Whereas most Goans will not speak about their own folk living in other states or abroad, many comments on how ‘outsiders’ are changing the state’s ‘sushegad’ character. It is often stated that people from other states who set up businesses in Goa have changed the state’s business culture leading to stiff competition for the locals. Thus, is migration good or bad, and how should the locals respond to these developments, is a question that needs pondering upon.Goa receives most migrants from its neighbouring states of Maharashtra and Karnataka, followed by Uttar Pradesh
Most people who migrated to Goa between 2001-2011 were of age group 20-35
Between 3000-4000 people migrated to Goa from Kerala, Odisha, West Bengal, and Rajasthan combined.
Fears are being expressed that the rate of growth of Goan population is less than the rate of inflow of migrants, and migrants might outpace the Goan population in the near future. The latest growth of population for the last decade is 8.17 percent according to 2011 census
