One of the unique part of interior decoration that you will find in Goa, owing to its Portuguese connection is the prevalence of interesting blue and while tiles with pictureque scenes or names on them known as azulejos. If you are tempted to get one of your own, drop in to the Velha Goa Galeria founded in 1999 by Ivo da Costa Azaredo fondly known as Bebe.
After travelling to Portugal, Azaredo was fascinated by these azulejos which adorned walls of different monuments there be it on houses, churches, railway stations and market places in azulejos. The learning of the history behind it, further fascinated him. He happened to meet Eduardo Bobone who not only painted on tiles but also had a dream of visiting Goa! Thus Velha Goa was born.
Velha Goa specializes in traditional hand painted azulejos and also carries a line of ceramics and imported products. While the raw materials are imported from Portugal, the tile painting is done by a team of artists at the workshop in Aquem, Margao and then sold at the retail store at Fontainhas, Panaji.
