It's a brand circus out there. Thinking of going on a shopping spree? Your friends are bound to suggest that you check out the famous brands which are on sale or have just got in their new collection. Want to gift a near and dear one? A simple pretty enough top from a lesser known name is not good enough. The person should be impressed by your gift after all. Right? Even kids are not immune to the brand drama these days, refusing to wear clothes from a name they aren't familiar with.

The growing popularity of online shopping too has contributed in propagating brands. If you're scouring online for your next buy, chances are high that instead of taking your chances and looking through a varied collection, you've instead probably chosen to select only those from populart brands. The generous discounts offered on online buys also help. After all why buy those trendy looking shoes at the jumble sale when you can get a similar pair online by just adding a couple more hundreds?

We are more brand conscious today due to rise in consumerisim, standard of living and globalisation as we have exposure to everything from all parts of the world. Also, due to the increase in spending and a fast paced life, it has become a game of one-upmanship. We feel a need to show off. Brands are an indicator of wealth and social status “ Dhruv Usgaonkar, lecturer

In general, we associate a well branded product as something that has high quality and good standards in itself. But along with that, there is also a certain awareness that not all branded things are exceptionally good, there could be a local product that is much better than the branded product even though it's less marketed or less popular “ Agnelo D'Souza, music teacher

I pick up random things from everywhere, mix n match and wear. I look for branded things only for active wear or something I will use for a long time. But for things that I don't wear much like for example a crop top “ it doesn't matter . Also, trends come and go. So it doesn't make sense in investing into something that costs me five times more just for the brand name.I keep altering my wardrobe every few months as I like wearing new things and you can get almost everything trendy at street markets like Bandra Road, Commercial Street, Bangalore, Fashion Street, Pune etc “ Flexcia D'Souza, fashion blogger

Brand doesn't matter because even non-branded stuff is great and cost effective. Of course quality matters but it's not like all non branded stuff is bad quality. It all depends on your choice- Rabiya Muzaver, wedding planner

I like non-branded stuff because it's cheaper. Mapusa market shopping is irreplaceable. I think spending on branded stuff is a waste of money. Ultimately clothes are clothes and quality is not always ensured even with branded things. I know one popular brand where the stuff wears out within a week “ Gail Pinto, student
