Questions over police delay in Kankonkar case

Panaji police, after filing a 1,371-page chargesheet against prime accused Zenito Cardozo and seven others in the Rama Kankonkar attempt-to-murder case on Monday, has now approached the Special Court at Merces seeking more time to investigate the case. The police claim they need to verify the caste certificate of the accused.

This move has raised questions, as the investigation team had already added the Atrocities Section two months ago after verifying Kankonkar’s caste certificate. Many are asking why the police now require additional time for the same verification.

The police have also stated that during the investigation, accused Francis Nadar revealed that he and his associates allegedly assaulted Rama Kankonkar with cable wires and smeared cow dung on his face due to personal issues and online mockery. This explanation appears to suggest that the case was driven by a personal dispute.

However, several people believe that the matter involves larger political interests and that attempts may be underway to present it as a minor local rivalry rather than a serious planned attack. The prime accused is known to be close to a powerful cabinet minister, leading to concerns that the investigation may not be fully transparent.

Goans are hoping that the police handle this case responsibly and ensure that all those involved, regardless of influence or position, are held accountable.
