Political 'self-goals' by parties as poll campaign heats up

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | APRIL 27, 2024, 01:18 AM IST

It was a week when Mumbai City and FC Goa scored as many as five goals in an engrossing ISL semi-final first leg at the Nehru stadium, Fatorda. On the political turf, however, players from Team BJP and Team Congress may face the charge of scoring self-goals in the ongoing Lok Sabha election campaign. First, it was Congress candidate Viriatbab Fernandes, whose Constitution remarks stirred a hornet’s nest, giving an armament to the saffron brigade to mount an all-out attack. The BJP, many say, however, scored two self-goals when the party drafted Congress turncoats, Diggu and Sankalpbab to lodge complaints against Viriatbab’s Constitution remark, as the duo attracted the ire on the social media for their betrayal of the voters, Constitution and even the Almighty in 2022. Any takers?

Sardinha's absence at Cong meet has tongues wagging

Where’s Congress South Goa MP Francisbab Sardinha, was a question that did the rounds in Curtorim countryside, the MP’s home village, as the Congress had its first public meeting there earlier this week. Whether the Congress leadership had invited the MP to attend the public meeting or not remains unclear. Sardinhbab, however, was conspicuous by his absence at Captain Viriatbab’s Curtorim meeting, leaving tongues wagging about whether the MP will stay away from the party’s ongoing election to retain the South Goa seat. Wait and watch.

Studied silence? Pallavi stays mum amid 'Constitution' furore
What’s BJP candidate Pallavibai Dempo’s take on the ongoing row kicked up by her Congress rival Captain Viriatbab Fernandes on his remarks over the Constitution? Well, while Captain Viriatbab seemed to have taken a stand not to comment on the issue in a bid to wriggle out of the controversy, one has not heard Pallavibai’s reaction on the row. Interesting, isn’t it, when BJP leaders right from Chief Minister Pramodbab Sawant to Prime Minister Narendrabai Modi seemed doing the talking on the issue, while Pallavibai seemed to have stayed away from the issue. You know why.

'Vitamin M' for vote 'guarantee'? Parties willing but cautious
Vitamin M has been an integral part of elections, one may say. With just 10 days to go for the May 7 polling, the question of “guarantee” has come into play. While the BJP top brass has not left a single stone unturned to play on PM Narendrabai Modi Ki Guarantee, no one seemed keen on taking the guarantee to get sure votes in return for Vitamin M. Sources say political players are ready and willing to pump in Vitamin M, but there’s a catch – who will give a guarantee to garner votes from a particular area in support of a particular candidate. Any takers?

‘No politics, please’: Altone defends chemistry with Kamat
When Goa Forward Chief Vijaibab Sardesai claimed that Congress MLA Altonbab D’Costa has a soft corner for Cong-turned-BJP MLA Diggu, the Quepem MLA was candid in admitting his friendship with the former Congress leader. He, however, hastened to add that he did not join Diggu in defecting from the Congress to join the BJP in 2022 because of certain values and his upbringing. Altonbab seemed indebted to Diggu for grooming him in Quepem post-defection by then Quepem MLA Babu Kavlekar. But, politics and friendship, he says are two different things. Interesting, isn’t it?
