The Department of Physical Education of Fr. Agnel College of Arts & Commerce, Pilar, in association with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs (DSYA) and the Archdiocese Board of Education, successfully hosted a one-day workshop on “Emerging Career Trends in Sports”, which culminated in the formal release of the inspiring book “Beyond the Fields – Careers, Calling and Change through Sports” authored by Dr. Kennedy Joseph D’Silva.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 128 delegates, including physical education teachers from schools, higher secondary institutions and colleges, coaches of DSYA, SAG, GFDC, and parents. The strong presence of stakeholders reflected the growing recognition of sports as a transformative force in education and society.
The workshop was enriched with expert presentations from leading professionals. Dr. Devashish Bagchi shared insights on sports science and medicine; Marcus Mergulhao highlighted opportunities in sports media; Silvester Stalin spoke on technology and innovation in sports; and Dr. Ajit Gopi focused on physical education and coaching. Sansiew D’Silva, freelance broadcast professional, replaced FIFA referee Maria Rebello and brought fresh perspectives on sports broadcasting and communication. The sessions culminated in a lively panel discussion moderated by senior sports administrator Jovito Lopes.
A defining moment of the day was the formal release of the book Beyond the Fields, which seeks to inspire youth to see sports not just as a game, but as a career, a calling, and a path to social change. The release was graced by Bishop Emeritus Alex Dias of the Diocese of Port Blair, who served as Chief Guest in the presence of Fr. Anthony Alemao from the Archdiocesan Board of Education.
Importantly, the workshop also became a platform for dialogue on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) and the Goa State Sports Policy. It was strongly felt that all stakeholders—educators, administrators, coaches, parents, and policy-makers—must be actively involved in the drafting and implementation process, ensuring that the policies are lived out “in spirit and truth” and not reduced to mere formalities.
