Francisco Bruto Da Costa has been appointed to the technical staff of Cong-Viettel FC in Vietnam, taking on dual roles as assistant coach and fitness coach.
The former Fransa footballer and AIFF junior coach brings a wealth of experience, having held various coaching positions in the Indian Super League (ISL) and with national teams outside of India.
Speaking to The Goan from Vietnam, Costa expressed his enthusiasm for the new opportunity. “I’m excited to take up this position at Cong-Viettel FC. It represents a significant challenge for me at this stage of my coaching career.
"The foundation of many teams in the country is built around players from this region, and I’m eager to discover the talent that can benefit both the Vietnam national team and the club in the future,” he said.
Costa previously served as deputy to coach Nelo Vingada at NorthEast United FC in 2016 and had a stint with Kerala Blasters. He has also gained valuable experience working with the Egyptian men’s and women’s national teams across various age groups. During this time, he developed a good rapport with head coach Carlos Queiroz and Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah while working with the Egyptian senior men's team.
Reflecting on his decision to pursue coaching instead of a professional playing career, Francisco stated, “I quit my job at St Francis Xavier High School in Macazana because I realized early on that if I wanted to implement my ideas and strategies about the game on the field, it was better to do so as a coach than as a player.”
With this new chapter in Vietnam, Costa is hoping to make a significant impact on Cong-Viettel FC and contribute to the growth of football in the country.
