Hard-working and ambitious, Goa coach Keenan Almeida is leaving no stone unturned to address the team’s shortcomings and chalk out a solid strategy to face strong opponents such as Services, Karnataka and Lakshadweep in the Group H qualifiers of the 79th National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy. The qualifiers will be held in Bengaluru, Karnataka, starting December 20.

In a conversation with The Goan Everyday, Almeida expressed satisfaction with the team composition and outlined his immediate objectives. The Goa team underwent a two-week preparatory camp, during which the players showed commitment and improvement.

“The boys are putting in sincere efforts, and this time we are hoping for good results in the Santosh Trophy,” said Almeida.

Goa will begin their group campaign against Services on December 20, followed by matches against Lakshadweep and Karnataka on December 24.

“We are trying to develop our own style of play, and I hope the boys will perform well in the tournament,” he added.

Almeida also expressed contentment with the players’ performance during the preparatory camp. The Goa team will play at least three practice matches before the tournament begins.

The players, meanwhile, stated that they have regained confidence and form after a long gap, crediting the proper guidance of their coach. Former FC Goa player Almeida said he is determined to bring more victories and achievements to the state.

Speaking further, Almeida stressed that his main goal is to correct past shortcomings by delivering improved performances and securing more wins.

“My focus is on improving the team’s condition, understanding the players’ abilities better, and then making the right decisions,” he said.

“All teams in the group are on the same level; we can’t rate anyone higher. We have to make fewer mistakes and put in more effort to get results,” Almeida observed, while acknowledging that Services and Karnataka are former champions and strong teams.

“As trained soldiers, we are always ready to fight. There is always a fighting spirit in the team, and we never give up,” said Almeida.

Goa have not won the Santosh Trophy in the last 49 years, but Almeida believes this squad has the potential to break the jinx.

“Playing in front of a big crowd is always motivating, but as players and coaches, we must be ready for any situation,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, defender Saviour Gama will miss the tournament due to injury and will not be accompanying the team.
