The development of hockey in Goa has gained fresh momentum following support from newly inducted Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar and a recent visit by Goans Hockey President Abhay Bhamaikar to the Asia Cup Championship at Rajgir, Bihar.

Speaking on Saturday, Tawadkar announced plans to construct a new international hockey stadium in Canacona. Discussions regarding the project have already begun with Hockey India, according to Dilip Tirkey, President of Hockey India. Tawadkar emphasised the State government’s commitment to promoting sports with measures to enhance sports infrastructure across Goa.

The proposed stadium is expected to boost Canacona’s profile as a key sports hub, offering modern amenities, larger audience capacity, and the capability to host international tournaments.

Tirkey, in a telephonic discussion with the Sports Minister from Bihar, pledged full support from Hockey India for the stadium project and reaffirmed assistance in promoting hockey across the State.
