Ambelim Sports Club prevailed over Betalbatim Sports Club 3-2 in penalty shootout to win the 27th Mandopa Football Cup, organised by Mandopa Sporting Club at Mandopa Sporting Club ground, on Sunday. The teams were locked in a goalless draw at the end of regulation period.
Ambelim had the first real chance of breaking the deadlock in the 4th minute but Jade Colaco’s blistering shot went wide. Betalbatim had their share of chances and looked to score through playmaker Ashley Fernandes, who muffed a chance with only rival goalkeeper to beat.
The trend continued in same vein with both teams showing the urgency and making many attacking moves but without success. Betalbatim then dominated the proceedings but missed a few chances as Klusner Pereira shot wide from close in the 38th minute. Klusner again missed a chance and later Ronaldo Coelho also shot wide.
In the penalty shootout, Leslie Fernandes, Perryson Fernandes and Semson Fernandes were on target for Ambelim, while Klusner Pereira and Olvier D’Souza converted for Betalbatim Sports Club. Ambelim were richer by Rs 50,000 and a trophy while Betalbatim Sports Club bagged Rs 40,000.
Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of special invitees, Anthony Pango, GFA vice-president (South); Edwin Cardozo (Cipru), Zilla Panchayat member, Navelim Constituency; Wilma Madeira, Sarpanch of VP Navdelim; and GFA executive committee members Jaju Fernandes, Anthony Mam Fernandes and John Silva.
